The Vinhos Verdes Region is often mistaken for a type of wine, but it is actually a Demarcated Region.

Due to the need for land to plant corn and potatoes, especially in the 18th century, the vines began to grow in height alongside trees, which led to the lack of grape ripening and the name given to the wines of this region – Vinhos Verdes –, producing very acidic wines, with low alcohol content and the presence of gas.

With the transformation of viticulture in the Vinhos Verdes Region, the wines today present great quality, high longevity, and aging potential.

The Region is divided into several Sub-regions: Amarante, Ave, Baião, Basto, Cávado, Lima, Monção and Melgaço, Paiva, and Sousa.
