What is Vinho Verde?
Vinho Verde is not exactly a type of wine, but a designation of origin that identifies a wine-growing region in Portugal.
It was due to the need for land to plant corn and potatoes, mainly in the 18th Century, that the vines started growing taller next to the trees, which led to the lack of ripening of the grapes and the name given to the wines from this region - Vinhos Verdes (Green Wines) -, producing very acidic wines with little alcohol. Vinho Verde -producing very acidic wines, with little alcohol and sometimes some gas, typically called Vinho Verde.
With the transformation of viticulture in the Vinho Verde region, white wines are no longer produced with unripe grapes, nor do they have the characteristics that advised their immediate consumption, but today they are of great quality, with a long shelf life and potential for ageing.
The Region is divided into various sub-regions: Amarante, Ave, Baião, Basto, Cávado, Lima, Monção e Melgaço, Paiva and Sousa.
