Ilha do Piço Açores

Imagine vineyards planted where it seems impossible to grow anything: on dark volcanic rock, at the mercy of the Atlantic Ocean’s storms.

1. The Terroir: Where Hostility Creates Rarity

The terroir of the Azores is profoundly shaped by the maritime climate and its geographical location.

The archipelago is situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 1,600 km west of the Portuguese mainland. The islands experience high rainfall, constant humidity and salty winds blowing directly in from the Atlantic. This combination creates a hostile environment for the vine, resulting in very low and challenging yields. However, what the vine sacrifices in quantity, it makes up for in complexity, concentration and freshness, producing wines that are unrivalled anywhere else in the world.

2. The Soils: Roots Anchored in ‘Lava Soil’

Unlike the soils on the mainland, the soil in the Azores is purely volcanic. The vines grow on ‘lajido’ or in crevices in black basalt rock, with almost no organic matter. These basalt soils are extremely rich in minerals and nutrients. The dark rock absorbs the sun’s heat during the day and releases it slowly at night, acting as a natural greenhouse that helps the grapes to ripen in such a cool and humid climate.

3. The Architecture of the ‘Currais’: Ancestral Protection

To protect the vines from the harsh wind and the saltiness of the sea, the early settlers created the ‘currais’ (or ‘curraletas’). These are a labyrinth of geometric walls made of loose stones that encircle the vines close to the ground. This man-made and natural landscape is so extraordinary that the Vineyard Landscape of Pico Island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

4. The Noble Grape Varieties: The Azorean Golden Trio

Although the region produces red wines with a fresh, Atlantic character, it is the indigenous white grape varieties that have put the Azores on the global map of fine wine:

Azores Arinto: It is the queen of acidity. Although it shares the same name, it is genetically distinct from the mainland Arinto. It produces wines that are distinctly citrusy, briny, vibrant and ultra-fresh.

Verdelho (Azores): Historically renowned, it is distinguished by its salty notes and complex tropical fruit flavours.

Terrantez do Pico: A rare and prized grape variety that was once on the verge of extinction. It offers a fascinating aromatic profile, blending floral notes with an unmistakable hint of saltiness.

5. Wine Characteristics: What to Expect in the Glass?

If we had to sum up the character of Azores wines in three words, they would be: freshness, minerality and salinity.

Aromatic Profile: Salty, maritime, mineral, with notes of gunpowder, iodine, phosphorus and wet stone, blended with fresh citrus.

Palate: These are taut wines, with a sharp yet balanced acidity and a distinctly salty finish that almost makes your mouth water. They seem to carry the ocean itself within them.

How to Pair Food and Wine?

These wines are the perfect accompaniment to seafood. They pair perfectly with:

Seafood: Local seafood (barnacles, grilled limpets or lobster).

Fish: Fatty fish grilled over charcoal (such as sea bream or sea bass).

Cheeses: Mature, full-flavoured cheeses (such as the famous São Jorge cheese).
