The Vinho Verde Region is often confused with a type of wine, but it is actually the Demarcated Region.

It was due to the need for land to plant corn and potatoes, especially in the 18th century, that the vines began to grow taller next to the trees, which led to the lack of ripeness of the grapes and the name given to the wines of this region - Vinhos Verdes - producing very acidic wines, with little alcohol and the presence of gas.

With the transformation of viticulture in the Vinho Verde region, today's wines are of high quality, with great longevity and ageing potential.

The Region is divided into various sub-regions: Amarante, Ave, Baião, Basto, Cávado, Lima, Monção e Melgaço, Paiva and Sousa.
