The first famous for its sparkling wine, the second around which lie the most important <strong>Denominations of Origin<\/strong> (<strong>DO<\/strong>), <strong>Barolo DOCG<\/strong> and <strong>Barbaresco DOCG<\/strong>, where wines of the same name are produced from the <strong>Nebbiolo<\/strong> grape variety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Although <strong>Nebbiolo<\/strong> is the most acclaimed grape variety, <strong>Dolcetto<\/strong> and <strong>Barbera<\/strong> are actually the most traditional red grape varieties in the region, and their wines are commonly found at Piedmontese tables.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17374\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Castelo-de-Barolo.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17374\" class=\"wp-image-17374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Castelo-de-Barolo-300x169.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Castelo-de-Barolo-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Castelo-de-Barolo-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Castelo-de-Barolo-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Castelo-de-Barolo-18x10.webp 18w, https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Castelo-de-Barolo.webp 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Castelo de Barolo. <strong><em>\u00a9 Tourinto Premium Wines <\/em><\/strong> All rights reserved.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><strong>What is the difference between a Barolo and a Barbaresco?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Both are <strong>DOC<\/strong> wines, with defined geographical boundaries and specific production and ageing regulations, made exclusively from the <strong>Nebbiolo grape variety<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barolo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In this <strong>DO<\/strong> we find 5 of the 11 communes (Cherasco, Diano d\u2019Alba, Grinzane Cavour, Novello, Roddi and Verduno) most important for the production of Barolo wines \u2013 <strong>La Morra, Monforte d\u2019Alba, Serralunga d\u2019Alba, <span class=\"\u2018yKMVIe\u2019\" role=\"heading\">Castiglione Falletto <\/span>and the municipality of Barolo<\/strong> \u2013 and it may only be released onto the market in January of the<strong> 4th<\/strong> year following the harvest, having undergone a minimum ageing period of <strong>38<\/strong> months, of which <strong>18<\/strong> must be in wood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barbaresco\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nesta<strong> DO <\/strong>encontramos as 4 comunas onde pode ser produzido um vinho<strong> Barbaresco<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211; <strong>Neive, Trieso, Alba (San Rocco Seno d&#8217;Elvio)<\/strong> e a comuna de <strong>Barbaresco<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 o qual apenas pode ser lan\u00e7ado para o mercado em Janeiro do <strong>3\u00ba<\/strong> ano ap\u00f3s a vindima, obedecendo a um est\u00e1gio m\u00ednimo de <strong>26<\/strong> meses dos quais <strong>9<\/strong> em madeira, sendo menos perfumado que o Barolo mas mais frutado.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">So, when you see <strong>Barolo<\/strong> or <strong>Barbaresco<\/strong> on a label, you will know that it is a wine made from 100% <strong>Nebbiolo<\/strong> grapes, produced in one of the communes within its <strong>DO<\/strong>, with defined production rules, a mandatory minimum ageing period, and great ageing potential. It can be produced in different styles, in large Slavonian oak barrels \u2013<strong><em>Botti<\/em><\/strong> (traditional ageing) \u2013 or in French oak barrels, reflecting a modern \u2018New variety?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It is a late ripening caste, with high levels of acidity and tannins, of little colour, 0riginating wines that may have notes:<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Primary:<\/strong> Floral notes like roses and dried flowers, fruity notes like sour cherry, plum, currant or strawberry, herbaceous notes like dried grass, lavender and fennel, and spicy notes like white and black pepper or liquorice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Secondary:<\/strong> Aging in wood can impart notes of tobacco, cigarette and smoke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Tertiary aromas:<\/strong>  Ageing in the bottle will produce tertiary notes of leather, truffle, tar, meat and mushrooms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What does the term Riserva mean in a Barolo or Barbaresco?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In exceptional years, producers may opt to produce a <strong>Barolo<\/strong> or a <strong>Barbaresco<\/strong> <strong>Riserva<\/strong>, which is aged for a longer period (5 years) and generally has a higher alcohol content, constituting a wine of excellence in an also excellent year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6094\" names can appear on wine labels?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Where wines are made from grapes from a <strong>single vineyard, the name of the vineyard<\/strong> will appear on the label, as well as when the grapes come from the <strong>same commune<\/strong>, the name of that commune may appear on the label.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The example is <strong>Barolo Monforte d\u2019Alba (Municipality) Villero | Bussia (Vineyard | MGA)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Giacomo-fenocchio-Barolo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17377 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Giacomo-fenocchio-Barolo-280x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"438\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 438px) 100vw, 438px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What about the wines that are produced from Nebbiolo, which are neither Barolo nor Barbaresco?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">You will find many wines from the <strong>Nebbiolo<\/strong> grape variety labelled <strong>Langhe DOC Nebbiolo.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">These wines are generally produced from vineyards located within the <strong>DO<\/strong> of <strong>Langhe<\/strong> but outside the <strong>DO<\/strong> of <strong>Barolo DOCG<\/strong> or <strong>Barbaresco DOCG<\/strong>. However, they may be produced using grapes from the <strong>DO <\/strong>of <strong>Barolo<\/strong> or <strong>Barbaresco<\/strong> that are not used for the production of a <strong>Barolo DOCG<\/strong> or a <strong>Barbaresco DOCG,<\/strong>in cases where the vintage was not of sufficient quality to produce a <strong>Barolo<\/strong> or a <strong>Barbaresco<\/strong>, with the producer opting to downgrade to <strong>Langhe DOC<\/strong>,  or in cases where yields per hectare exceeded the permitted production limit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Put simply, we have the <strong>Barolo<\/strong> and <strong>Barbaresco<\/strong> <strong>Riserva<\/strong> as wines of exceptional quality, followed by the <strong>non-Riserva<\/strong> wines from a single vineyard, the <strong>Barolos<\/strong> which are produced from grapes sourced from different vineyards, and finally the <strong>Langhe Nebbiolo,<\/strong> where quality can range from reasonable to very good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">However, there are some fantastic exceptions, where outstanding <strong>Barolos<\/strong> are produced using grapes from various vineyards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dolcetto<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Dolcetto<\/strong> is Piedmont\u2019s most popular red grape variety and is generally regarded as the region\u2019s \u2018everyday\u2019 wine. However, higher-quality Dolcetto wines are available, usually labelled <strong><em>Superiore<\/em><\/strong><em>, with the most famous appellation being <strong>Dogliani DOCG<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It produces wines with medium acidity and medium to high tannins, with fruity aromas of black plum, red cherry, dried herbs and, at times, pepper; these wines are generally produced to be enjoyed young, although some may be selected for ageing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5684\" style=\"width: 1752px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5684\" class=\"wp-image-5684 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Barbera-e-Dolcetto.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1742\" height=\"1163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Barbera-e-Dolcetto.jpg 1742w, https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Barbera-e-Dolcetto-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Barbera-e-Dolcetto-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Barbera-e-Dolcetto-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Barbera-e-Dolcetto-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Barbera-e-Dolcetto-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1742px) 100vw, 1742px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5684\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dolcetto e Barbera.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Barbera<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Barbera is also a very popular red grape variety and widely planted in the Piedmont region.<strong>Barbera d\u00b4Asti DOCG<\/strong> is considered to be of higher quality than <strong>Barbera d\u00b4Alba DOC<\/strong>, since around <strong>Alba<\/strong> are the <strong>DOs<\/strong> of<strong>Barolo<\/strong> and <strong>Barbaresco<\/strong>, and the best slopes are reserved for the planting of <strong>Nebbiolo<\/strong>. However, there are exceptions where we can find <strong>Barbera d\u00b4Alba<\/strong> wines of great quality.<\/p>\n<p>It produces wines with high acidity, medium to low tannins, a deep colour, and aromas of plum and red cherry, and sometimes black pepper; they can be enjoyed young, but most benefit from bottle ageing.<\/p>\n<h2>The Great Authors of Piedmont at Tourinto<\/h2>\n<p>To give you a real sense of the grandeur and untamed character we\u2019ve been talking about, we\u2019ve brought together some of the region\u2019s most exclusive wines in our cellar:<\/p>\n<p class=\"product_title entry-title\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/en\/product\/rocche-costamagna-dolcetto-dalba-2024\/\">Rocche Costamagna Dolcetto d\u00b4Alba<\/a>: <\/strong>The perfect introduction to Piedmont.<\/p>\n<p class=\"product_title entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/en\/product\/ratti-langhe-nebbiolo-reggimento\/\"><strong>Ratti Langhe Nebbiolo Reggimento:<\/strong><\/a> The elegance of Nebbiolo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"product_title entry-title\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourinto.pt\/en\/product\/rocche-costamagna-barbera-dalba-superiore-2023\/\">Rocche Costamagna Barbera d\u2019Alba Superiore:<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>The structure and freshness of Barbera.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What white grape varieties can we find in the region? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">We can find indigenous white grape varieties such as <strong>Arneis<\/strong>, <strong>Cortese<\/strong>, <strong>Timorasso, Favorita<\/strong> or <strong>Moscato<\/strong>, as well as international varieties such as <strong>Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong> or <strong>Chardonnay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Arneis \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Produces wines with medium acidity, aromas that can range from herbaceous, green apple, tangerine and white flowers to pear and stone fruit, an excellent choice as a social wine or to accompany fish dishes and salads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Cortese \u2013 <\/strong> It produces wines with high acidity, with aromas of citrus fruits, green apple, pear and white flowers, and may develop tertiary notes of almonds with ageing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Timorraso \u2013<\/strong> A grape variety that was almost extinct in the 1980s, it produces aromatic wines with notes of stone fruit, high acidity and good structure, as well as great potential for ageing in the bottle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Favourite \u2013<\/strong> Fresh and citrusy, it stands out for its intense notes of lemon, lime, grapefruit and green apple, accompanied by a subtle hint of wild flowers and a distinct herbaceous note.
